There are practical reasons for this. A standard chair has two legs in the front and two in the back. This allows it to be easily pushed around. A table has four legs so that it can be easily lifted and placed where you want it.

It is very obvious why. The table is square and you have 4 corners on the table. Why would you need 5 or 6 legs to make the table balanced? Furthermore, on a round table, they will only add 4 legs in the middle of the table with a square support.  There is no need to add more legs on a standard table. However, if you have an extremely long table it will need more support and they will add 2 to 6 extra legs on the table depending on how long the table is.

Standard chairs and tables typically have four legs because this provides the most balanced and stable support. Four legs also allows for more efficient use of materials, since it requires less material than more legs. Additionally, four legs allows for the most efficient use of space, since the legs can be spaced evenly apart to fit the size of the table or chair.

I think its because they are trying to attain stability and that's why the cannot have five legs. For six legs,I think they can have but the carpenters are trying to balance the economy. The extra two legs plus another two extra legs can make up another seat.Since a four- legged seat serves better and its stable, then there's no need of adding some extra legs.

Standard tables and chairs will have only four llegs to keep itself balanced; there is no need of using extra wood or other material for something. If there are five-six legs, then a question will come - why not seven-eight legs?

When you need something, use the source for fulfilment of the need, never use extra which is not important and try not to waste source for limited things.

It is very easy to relate with. Everything in life or in nature is designed in such a way that balance must be maintained. If you are the observant type you would notice that this principle cuts across everything in nature. That's why there is rainy season and there is dry season. Imagine if there is no dry season, and It's rainy throughout. It will become pretty difficult for nature to balance itself. In biology, it's called balance in nature.

As for the case study, a standard table is having four legs because that's the only way it can remain balance without it being shaky and unsteady. If the table was designed with five or six leg, there would be imbalance which would make it unable to stand properly, thereby rocking from one end to the other.

Tables and chairs commonly come in square top-surface; hence, adding one or two more legs to build balance or support isn't just unnecessary but also impractical. Two additional legs would do nothing but increase the price of the furniture, as additional material would increase the cost of production including labor (not to mention the waste of resources). However, in the case of long tables, additional two legs are added in the middle to be able to balance the weight of the table itself as well as anything that will be placed on it.

I do think you can always have your own tables and chairs with extra legs if you want them to be personalized or you want to incorporate your own designs; but then again, that would be impractical.

Tables with four legs can, and often do. If the four legs are uneven, or if the floor's not flat, the table will wobble — resting first on one set of three legs, then tipping to another. Put more than four uneven legs on a table, and it can wobble every which way, always seeking to rest on three legs

If you want to add one leg, then you can put it in the center of the table. So that it is balanced, despite having four legs.

It's because the number 4 is a perfect square and it suits the number of corners that a square table and chair. That 4 leg symbolizes stability of that item rather than 6 and 5 which doesn't seem to fit

The standard design of chairs and tables having four legs can be traced back to historical and cultural practices. Four legs provide stability and balance for the furniture, as well as ease of manufacturing and production. Additionally, the human body is naturally balanced over four points, making four-legged furniture more ergonomic and comfortable to use. The design has been widely adopted and became a norm over time.

The four legs are to make sure the table or chair does not fall apart. It is also because are six legs are going to be weaker.

Chairs and tables typically have four legs for stability and balance, as this configuration provides a stable base that can evenly distribute weight and prevent wobbling or tipping.
