Friedrich Miescher, a Swiss physician, first discovered the existence of DNA (though he referred to it as "nuclein") in 1869. Miescher isolated DNA from white blood cells found in pus samples obtained from discarded bandages. However, at the time of his discovery, the significance of DNA as the hereditary material was not fully understood. It wasn't until later, with the work of scientists like Watson, Crick, Franklin, and others, that the role of DNA as the molecule of heredity became widely recognized.
