The first animal to be sent into orbit around the Earth was a Soviet dog named Laika. Laika was launched into space aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. She was the first living creature to orbit the Earth and paved the way for human space exploration. Unfortunately, Laika did not survive the mission due to the lack of a reentry plan.
