Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin, in 1928. He noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum had contaminated one of his petri dishes, and that bacteria in the dish were unable to grow near the mold. He then isolated and purified the substance responsible for this inhibition of bacterial growth, which he named penicillin.

The first antibiotic was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. The antibiotic was derived from a strain of the bacteria Penicillium notatum and was used to treat bacterial infections, such as strep throat and staph infections. Fleming's discovery revolutionized the field of medicine and paved the way for the development of other antibiotics.

Alexander Fleming

After isolating the mould and figuring out it as belonging to the Penicillium genus, Fleming obtained an extract from the mildew, naming its lively agent penicillin. He decided that penicillin had an antibacterial impact on staphylococci and different gram-fine pathogens.

The first antibiotic discovered was penicillin, and it was discovered by Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming in 1928. The bacterial strain it was initially effective against was Staphylococcus aureus. Fleming observed that the mold Penicillium notatum produced a substance that inhibited the growth of bacteria, leading to the discovery of penicillin as the first true antibiotic.
