Numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus), also known as banded anteaters, typically give birth to four young at a time. However, the litter size can range from one to as many as six young. Numbats are marsupials, which means they have a unique reproductive system. After a gestation period of about 14 days, the newborn numbats crawl into the mother's pouch, where they continue to develop and nurse for several months. The young numbats spend approximately six to seven months in the pouch, gradually growing and becoming more independent until they are ready to leave and explore the world on their own.
