Selenium is actually extremely beneficial for the human body! It's an essential mineral that the body needs, though only in small amounts. It helps with bodily operations like regulating metabolism or thyroid functions. Selenium is an antioxidant, meaning that it prevents cell damage in the body. It's also been found that selenium prevents several types of cancers. Dozens of studies have shown that people with high levels of selenium in their bloodstream show less risk of contracting breast, colon, lung, and prostate cancer. Finally, selenium prevents mental decline, such as Alzheimer's. Several studies have shown that people with Alzheimer's generally have lower levels of selenium in their body, and people with higher levels have a fewer risk of contracting it, or other memory related disorders.

I'm not a medical person but when I saw your question,I had to do a tad bit research and I found out some very interesting facts.

Selenium is very vital to our health. It is an essential mineral and should be included in our diets.Although needed in small amount ,selenium is essential in metabolism and thyroid functions.

Metabolism occur in our body daily and the byproducts are free radicals.Free radicals are essential for our health but excess free radicals lead to oxidative stress which can damage healthy cells.Oxidative stress has been linked to heart disease, premature aging, cancer and stroke.Selenium reduces oxidative stress by keeping free radicals in check.

Selenium reduces the risk of certain cancer and protect against heart disease.

Their are other benefits of selenium. You can check online for some other benefits.

Acts as a powerful antioxidant

Antioxidants are compounds in foods that prevent cell damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are normal byproducts of processes like metabolism that are formed in your body daily.

They often get a bad rap, but free radicals are essential for your health. They perform important functions, including protecting your body from disease.

However, things like smoking, alcohol use, and stress can cause an excess of free radicals. This leads to oxidative stress, which damages healthy cells .
