When the refrigerator was first invented it needed a block of ice to keep it cool. The inside of the box was very dark and hard to see inside. It was harder to find the items in the refrigerator and it made it very hard to keep it clean. When they added the light to the refrigerator it made it easy for a person to find the items that were stored in there and also to clean the inside of the refrigerator. Even though we have lights in the refrigerator there are still items that get pushed to the back of the shelves that spoil and grow green mold on them. At least this way we have a better chance to clean the inside of the refrigerator and keep it sanitary and safe for us to store our food in.

The benefit of having a light inside either compartment is that it becomes easier to find things. Since most people open the refrigerator far more often than the freezer, the benefit of having a light in the refrigerator is considerably larger.
