Strenuous activities such as long walk or run could be responsible for outer pain of the foot, long standing or wearing very tight shoe could also cause this problem, pains are indicated of a problem, sometimes a soft massage could help, but if the pain persist it always advisable to contact the doctor for medical assistance.

Maybe it's an ankle sprain and radiate down(ligaments are damaged) 

Orr from the shoes itself  that makes that pain
