I have learned this the hard way... there is no proper way to rub your eyes. You will irritate them more. Just use a cold compress if you have something irritating them. Just leave them be or you can make them red and irritated.

Does rubbing your eyes damage them?

Rubbing your eyes can help relieve itchiness or irritation, but it should be done gently. To properly rub your eyes, start by pressing the pads of your fingers gently onto the closed eyelids. Then, use your index fingers to make small circles around the outside of your eyes, moving inwards towards the bridge of your nose. Finish by pressing the pads of your fingers onto your eyelids again.

There isn't a good way to rub your eyes even though it feels great. I have found that closing my eyes and putting something cold on them refreshes them. I use cold tea bags but a cool wet cloth or slices of cucumber would be just as good. Rubbing them on a regular basis will damage the skin around your eyes.

Make circular motions with your index finger and thumb without any pressure on the eye itself. You can also apply artificial tears or lubricant eye drops, rubbing eyes often can potentially damage eyes structure and vision.

It's best to avoid rubbing your eyes, but if necessary, use a clean tissue or the back of your hand to gently apply pressure to the outer corners. Avoid rubbing too hard or with dirty hands to prevent eye infections or damage.
