The old traditional Shepherd's pie used either ground beef or lamb to make the pie. However, people no longer want to eat beef or lamb so they substitute this for chicken.

You will need the following ingredients to make your Shepherd's pie:

  • 1 Tablesppon olive oil
  • 1 Teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 large onion firmly chopped
  • 3 to 4 carrots firmly chopped
  • 1 cup of frozen peas
  • 3 to 4 sprigs of fresh thyme firmly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 glass of red wine
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup of chicken broth
  • Mashed potatoes - normally 6 large potatoes cooked and mashed
  • 1 egg beaten
This is basically what most people call a chicken, beef or lamb pot pie. However, with a Sheperd's Pie they use the mashed potatoes instead of a pie crust.

I never thought that there is a shepherd pie. The closest food that resembles it is 'hot steamed buns' in my country Philippines. In fact, it is considered one of the Chinese dishes and they are made of chicken, beef, or pork.

Traditionally, shepherd's pie is made with minced lamb, vegetables and mashed potatoes. The meat is added to a fragrant combination of tender carrots, onions and celery, known in French cooking as merepoux, which is then braised with stock, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste and bay leaves. A delicious gravy is made.

Traditional Shepherd's Pie is a classic dish originating from the United Kingdom. While there may be variations in recipes, the key ingredients typically include:

Ground Meat: The traditional choice is lamb, which gives the dish its name. However, ground beef or a mixture of beef and lamb can also be used.

Vegetables: Commonly used vegetables include onions, carrots, and peas. These are typically diced or chopped.

Gravy or Sauce: A rich gravy or sauce is used to bind the meat and vegetables together. It adds flavor and moisture to the dish. Beef or vegetable stock is often used as a base for the gravy.

Mashed Potatoes: The top layer of Shepherd's Pie is covered with a generous layer of mashed potatoes. They are traditionally made with boiled potatoes, butter, milk, and seasoning.

Butter: Butter is commonly used to sauté the onions and vegetables, and it is also added to the mashed potatoes for a creamy texture.
