In my community, the word for greetings is ,'mirembe' which means peace. To show you are peaceful, one had to show their hands. This meant they had not hidden any weapons. So they greeted each other using a handshake.

The handshake is believed to have originated in ancient Greece as a symbol of peace. It was used as a way to demonstrate that neither person was holding a weapon, as they would extend their right hand, which was usually the hand they used to hold their weapon, to shake hands with the other person. In addition, it was a sign of mutual trust and respect between two individuals. Over time, the handshake has become a common greeting in many cultures around the world and is still used today as a way to show goodwill and trust.

It was a way to communicate peacefulness- extending an empty hand was a pretty direct way of saying, I'm not holding a weapon, so I'm not going to hurt you." As the practice unfolded in Rome, it was more a forearm grab.

The handshake is a social custom that began in the 4th century AD. It is a simple, weighty event in which a person of The same rank or status shakes hands with a lower-ranked person. The lower-ranked person typically is called the "groom" and the higher-ranked person is called the "gift." The gift is typically given in memory of a loved one or someone who helped them in some way.

The handshake may have originated in prehistory as a demonstration of peaceful intent, since it shows that the hand holds no weapon. Another possibility is that it originated as a symbolic gesture of mutual commitment to an oath or promise: two hands clasping each other represents the sealing of a bond.
