Yes and no! Papaya is a good source of essential nutrients to a pregnant woman especially the ripe ones, but the unripe papaya is the one that must be avoided by pregnant women. The ripe papaya is rich in fiber, potassium, choline, vitamins A, B and C. All these nutrients are important for a pregnant woman.
On the other hand, unripe papaya poses great dangers to a pregnant woman, basically because it contains certain chemicals that could cause miscarriage. Such chemicals are: latex and papain. Latex can trigger marked uterine contractions which could lead to early labour. Papain maybe mistaken for prostagladins needed for inducement of labour. It could also loosen the membrane surrounding the fetus. Papain can cause allergic reactions which is not safe the pregnant woman and the fetus.
The conumption of papaya shouldn't be completely be avoided by pregnant women but rather make a good choice in eating the very ripe ones and not the unripe.
