These individuals are generally not harmed by their captors and may even be treated with kindness. A person who develops Stockholm syndrome often experiences symptoms of posttraumatic stress: nightmares, insomnia, flashbacks, a tendency to startle easily, confusion, and difficulty trusting others.

Stockholm syndrome is a subconscious defense mechanism in which the abused victim tries to rationalize the behavior of their abuser, to the point of defending them because they know this very well that if anyone try to contact with them they start a violent outburst on it.

It is basically a condition of the mind where you fall in love or in attraction with the person who holds you hostage. Though the person who holds you hostage can attempt to make you fall in love or your minds chemical plays the trick. Either way the outcome is you falling for the people who do bad to you. So that is the stockholm syndrome.

The term "Stockholm syndrome" was first coined by Swedish psychiatrists in the early 2000s as a result of the high number of cases of mental health problems that developed in Stockholm, Sweden after the closure of a mental health service there in the early 1990s. The syndrome was first named after the town in Sweden where the problem began to exist and the name was derived from the fact that many of the problems developed in "Stockholm" were caused by the influx of refugees from the town.
