I just want to know if upwork really pay

Yes, it is but it is totally depended on your skills. If you don't have the skill, then it is totally wastage of time to spending time on Upwork or other portals. But if you have skills then you will target those clients who actually want your skill and based on your skill client will definitely hire you.

I've been looking into UpWork. But am quite apprehensive about committing. I have taken up editing and proofreading a manuscript from a client last month. Could you tell me more about UpWork, please? What do you do there?

yes it does, but for you to get involved you should have the skills, some of task are transitional tasks, typing and writing task. One method of finding out the functionality of a site is to check the review, also check for payment proof from users.

As I mentioned, by default you're probably ahead of 40% of your competition already, and so long as you develop some decent skills and put some thought and care into your proposals, it's not that hard to get ahead of 50% more and be in the top 10% of people submitting proposals on Upwork. And that means: Better jobs.

They do pay if being hired by the employers there. If you meet the requirements, then there is nothing to worry about. I am sure you can find jobs online here that is suitable for you. We can never know if not trying it. I am a member of this site, but I have not tried to find a job here. The reason is I still have my job online.
