How is study abroad different from a student exchange program?

Study abroad allows a student to take his/her studies overseas while student exchange program can be done locally not necessarily traveling out of one's country. It's especially meant to help the students gain tactics on various ways of performing in subjects by coping from top performing students from other institutions.

Student exchange programs allow you to complete part of your studies at an overseas partner institute under a formal agreement.

Study abroad program allow students to undertake study at an overseas institutions, but usually without a formal agreement between institutions.

Study abroad allows you to go abroad and complete your entire course of study in the university you would like to study in. Student exchange program more likely refers to a small period of time (not the entire course) where a student can go and study in another place. It could be long term (up to 8 -10 months) or short term (lasting from 2 to 12 weeks)

In study abroad you get admitted for a Masters program or PHD program. While in an exchange program an organization like schools can exchange their personals for a work study for a duration agreed by the two organizations involved.
