Once the expiration date of your permitted stay has passed. You have no actual immigration status, if you were working, based on having a visa that permitted U.S. work. You must now stop. On the other hand, you are not expected to leave the united states. You are allowed to stay until the decision is made.

I think you need to apply for another interview in the US Embassy at your place. I am sure they can accommodate you and give you a new visa. If it is possible, you can do this online and no need to go to the building office of this embassy.

This is a serious issue as once the immigration is expired then a person is illegal there. You can contact the visa service who can provide you the visa assistance in order for you to be legal again.
