I have a mental illness. The police saved my life in a unique way. They have also helped my family many times before.  I sent a letter thanking them, but regret it.

It was too long, sentimental, informal, and just really quirky. Probably the weirdest letter they’ve ever gotten.

I can’t stop thinking I should have been more proper. I want to make these guys look good to their superiors. It was so important to thank them properly for their humanity after so many cops have treated me like a freak.

The department just got a big lawsuit for excessive force, they have enough to deal with, and now I’ve wasted their time with a long, offbeat thank you letter.

How can I get over this embarrassment? Is it necessary to apologize or anything?

I actually appreciate things and scenarios like these. Why? Because not all the people can do what you did. You should not regret it either because what you're doing is a form of gratitude. It's definitely not an embarrassment. Perhaps it is the first time you gave it to the police you are talking to that's why you are experiencing such. But in my own, it is not regrettable nor an embarrassment to appreciate things and gratify others especially if they deserve it.

If you are embarrassed by sending a dumb letter to the police, just don't think about it. If you write an apology letter, it will just make you feel more embarrassed by sending an apology letter. Just try to forget about it. If you can't go visit a counselor. Hopefully, this should help you.

So long as you meant we'll I see nothing wrong about it. Policeman are just like any other human beings and they need recognition for the work that they do to citizens.

In my opinion, you just need to let go. I am sure the policeman would not mind about it. If you are still feeling not at peace, then it is best to talk to him directly.

If you're feeling embarrassed after sending a letter to the police that you now regret, here are some steps you can take to address the situation:

1. **Acknowledge your feelings:** It's normal to feel embarrassed or regretful after making a mistake. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment.

2. **Apologize if necessary:** If the content of the letter was inappropriate or if you feel it may have caused any inconvenience, consider reaching out to the police department to apologize. Keep the apology brief, sincere, and respectful.

3. **Learn from the experience:** Reflect on what led you to send the letter and what you can do differently in the future to avoid similar situations. Use this as an opportunity for personal growth and self-awareness.

4. **Move forward:** Once you've taken steps to address the situation, try to let go of the embarrassment and focus on moving forward. Everyone makes mistakes, and what's important is how you handle them and learn from them.

5. **Seek support:** If you're struggling to cope with feelings of embarrassment or if the situation is causing you significant distress, consider talking to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional for support and guidance.

Remember that making mistakes is a part of being human, and it's okay to slip up occasionally. What's important is how you handle the situation and what you learn from it.
