As you said the phone is too bad to boot. The wiping out of data from the phone can only be done if the phone was going to on. But if you can find a way to put on the phone:

1) Go to settings

2) navigate to  system

3) locate reset option

4) under this you would see factory data reset.

With these steps, you would be able to wipe out your data you have in the phone.

You go to settings, then factory data reset and you click, erase all data. This is possible only if you're using android. You will erase all the data completely including the applications.

Also, you can format your phone. This too loses all the data in the phone. If you have access to a computer, then you can try this out.

I prefer using the first method but if it doesn't work, you can try the second method.

This won't work at all because the cell phone is damaged and it won't even turn on. The only option he has is to destroy the motherboard or try to use a software program to force the phone to turn on and do a complete memory wipe.

Actually one should read the question first before answering. Without booting how can one do a soft reset. Moreover, a soft reset can't wipe it completely. Even a hard reset need much more process to completely shred a system from recovery. But here in this answer, the problem is not technical, but understanding the question. An answer should always be an answer. Not a suggestion or just a reply or comment.

In order to do this, you will need to download and install a program on your computer. The name of the program is Syncois. This works with all iOS and Android device.

  1. Download and install the free program on your computer.
  2. Plug in the device to see if it is recognized by the program.
  3. This might take a few times to turn it off and on or plug and unplug the USB cable on the phone.
  4. If the program finally recognizes the phone you can do a complete data wipe using this program.
If your phone is that damaged then the only thing you can really do is destroy the phone completely by taking it apart and removing the motherboard inside the phone. If you destroy the motherboard, there is no way anyone can get the information stored on your phone.
