Butternut Wood is the best type of wood to start practice with carving for beginners. It has a nice blond, gold to dark brown color to it and it grains well, can be cut from all directions. Butternut wood also takes stains beautifully. It is super soft, takes up polishes and oil smoothly, very lightweight so perfect for making furniture.

BLACK Walnut has a rich color and grain that has made it popular for a wide range of products, including furniture.

Basswood is used in woodworking by a lot of people. It has almost no grain , the texture is really soft.

Aspen is also quite soft, so it is easy to use for carving.

Cedar wood is one of the favorite wood for carvers. It is sweet-scented, durable, and naturally resistant to decay.

The best wood for carving depends on several factors, such as the type of carving you are doing, your skill level, and personal preferences. Some of the most popular types of wood for carving include:

Basswood: This is a soft wood that is easy to carve, making it a great choice for beginners.

Butternut: This wood is also soft and easy to carve, but has a slightly more pronounced grain than basswood.

Cherry: Cherry wood is harder than basswood and butternut, making it suitable for more intricate carvings.

Walnut: This wood is also harder than basswood and butternut, and has a beautiful, rich color and grain pattern.

Maple: Maple wood is very hard and dense, making it a good choice for fine detail work.

Ultimately, the best wood for carving depends on your specific needs and preferences. It's always a good idea to experiment with different types of wood to see which one works best for you
