Not all female mammals menstruate like human females do. The only known animals that do are apes and monkeys (primates), bats, elephant shrew, and the spiny mouse. They do feel some discomfort which is expected. Some other female mammals that have an estrous cycle which may seem like they are having their periods are as follows:

  • Hamster
  • Guinea pig
  • Sheep
  • Goat
  • Cow
  • Pig
  • Horse
  • Elephant
  • Red kangaroo
  • Lion
  • Dog
  • Rabbit

Most female mammals have an estrous cycle, yet only ten primate species, four bats species, the elephant shrew, and one known species of spiny mouse have a menstrual cycle.

Is there any specific reason behind it? why only these female mammals have a menstrual cycle and not all others?

Even among mammals, menstruation is quite uncommon in the animal kingdom. A few species of bats and elephants shrews also menstruate, though not frequently as humans.

Period cramps, or menstruation, occur in several species of female mammals, including primates, bats, shrews, and some species of whales and dolphins. However, it is not universal among all mammals, and some species have evolved different reproductive strategies.

It turns out, menstruation is quite rare in the animal kingdom, even amongst mammals. Other primates menstruate (though not as heavily as humans do), as do some species of bats and elephant shrews. That's it.9
