Is it safe to sit in a car when lightning occurs?
more_vert
It is hundred percent safe to be in a car while it is raining and there is lightning or thunder strike. As long as there is an insulator in form of metal that would direct the thunderstorm charged particles to the ground.

Yes, of course, lightning will not hit you while you are in the car.

Wouldn't know for sure but I guess it would be safe, so long as it is not under a tree or near electricity lines that would be disastrous.

Yes, it is completely safe as the rubber from the tires isolates the lightning.  You will be safe as long as all doors and windows are completely shut. Make sure you do not have anything hanging out of the car, or even any issues on the glasses, such as cracks, otherwise you will not really be safe.

Even though you should be safe from lightning, beware of flooding areas. Also, avoid parking or being near trees or parks, as they attack lightning.

The same idea is valid when you are showering, for example. If you are wearing rubber flip flops and lightning strikes your house, you will be isolated from the power (as long as you are not touching anything else.

Yes, it is safe. This is because the metal frame in the car will direct lightning currents to the ground and neutralize them making you safe. Lots of people tend to think that the rubber tire is the one that makes you safe inside a car since it acts as a good insulator but this is false. What matters is the metal on top of the four tires.

Actually, and that's why it is advisable whenever there's lightning, you should ensure all the car windows are closed otherwise, you'll complete the circuit and this may lead you to death.

Whenever there's lightning, the best thing to do is take your car aside but not in an open field then turn off all the car engines, and don't touch metallic appliances until lightning is over. Being inside a car does guarantee you 100% safety vehicles can strike as well and that's why you should not touch any metal inside the car.

I had seen some videos the lightning strikes on one car. It starts to explode. The car is in the middle of a field. I haven't seen a car that was struck by a lightning in busy streets or cities. I think the lighting strikes anywhere and it is so frightening. That is why everyone to be inside their home or a building. The lighting could strike anywhere.

There was a video that the lightning strikes a car that was moving. It was all sudden and the lightning even left a crater in the ground. The passenger of the car said it was difficult to breathe inside.  The two-passenger knows that will die in a moment. They know they will not come out of the car alive, but then there is someone who rescued them. If you watch the video it is really impossible to survive the blast but then to their surprise they just celebrate their 47-year anniversary.  Too good that there are people who saved them. Lightning strikes anywhere, but it does not strike the same place twice as they said. image

Oh wow, maybe because it is near the electric post that is why it was attracted to it.

It may be safe to say in a car while lightning or thunder strikes is throwing tantrums probably because the car insulator is working perfectly fine but it's not safe nor advisable to drive when it's raining with lightning or thunder strikes taking place. The reason for this is that when it's raining, the road becomes too wet and slippery which causes accidents to happen easily because the car tires would lose their footing too easily and the brakes wouldn't work well 100 percent. Also, the vision of the car driver is hampered by the rain thereby making it impossible to have a good look at the road he or she is driving on and this is very risky. Coming to the part of thunder and lightning, even though it may not strike the car, it can strike other things that might fall onto the road and cause accidents. So, it's not entirely safe.

You are safe in a car because the lightning will go around the surface of the vehicle and then go to the ground. The metal is the conductor would direct the current around the object and discharge it safely to the ground.

Yes, most cars are safe and protect you from lightning. because the rubber tires on a car protect by insulating you from the ground, the metal is a good conductor of electricity. Once you are inside the car don't touch any metal and pull off the road until the storm passes. A good rule of thumb is to keep your hands in your lap until the storm passes.

It is fine and safe to be inside a car when there is lightning. I have not seen anyone being struck by this inside the car. If it does, it is just an accident.

I think it is not safe to be in a car while lighting. But before the superhero movie minal murali, all are afraid of lighting in our state. After seeing the movie now all are thinking on lighting super power will be got.

It is not safe to come out during lightening, but if you are already outside and lighting starts then that is a different case car can be used as a protector, but only the metal part is safe not the rubber part. Only god and your good luck can save you from lightning if you are outside and don't have any other safe option other than a car.

Yes it is safe, a lightning bolt can strike you in an open area and if you have no covering above you. A car is not typically steel that conducts electricity, it's a different kind of metal that's why it's safer than you're on a place with no roof or shelter to protect you

Yeah it ok and very safe to sit in a car when a lighting happens, because the car has insulator that would make what you are afraid of not to happen.

No, it is not safe to sit in a car when lightning occurs. Lightning can travel through metal objects and a car is not a safe place to be during a lightning storm. The safest place is a sturdy building or a hard-topped metal vehicle with the windows rolled up.

No, it's not safe to sit in a car during lightning as it can still conduct electricity. Stay away from vehicles and find a safe indoor location.

There is no harm that can come from sitting in a car when lightning occurs. lightning is a electric storm that Kaufman and Massa found the first time it occurred in a car, and as such, should be handled with caution. leaving your legs open will help you protect them from being dashed out from the vehicle during the storm.

Like trees, houses, and people, anything outside is at risk of being struck by lightning when thunderstorms are in the area, including cars

anything outside is at risk of being struck by lightning when thunderstorms are in the area, including cars. The good news though is that the outer metal shell of hard-topped metal vehicles does provide protection to those inside a vehicle with the windows closed.
