Some studies point out that stevia indeed is not only a good alternative to sugar, but is also helpful in terms of weight loss since it doesn't contain any calories. However, there have also been studies that declared results showing that people tend to have higher levels of sugar upon eating food containing stevia. In fact, the US FDA has not given safety approval to stevia leaves; hence, they warn people from consuming them, as doing so may potentially worsen their health. Moreover, stevia can also potentially interact with anti-fungals, anti-inflammatory, anti-virals, fertility agents, and other medications.

Stevia is a natural sweetener linked to numerous benefits, including lower blood sugar levels. While refined extracts are considered safe, research on whole-leaf and raw products is lacking. When used in moderation, stevia is associated with few side effects and can be a great substitute for refined sugar.
