Why do some animals glow in the dark?

The light is produced by a compound called luciferin, which releases light when it reacts with oxygen O2. All biolumimescent animals contqins lucifern, but some produce tgeir own, where somw absorb bacteria that contain luciferin.

Some sea creatures like jellyfish has bioluminescence ability.mechanism for producing light by organisms.

Insects like firefly and glowworm also glow with same mechanism.

When created by a predator, a bioluminescent light has the power to surprise and stun potential prey or it can illuminate them so the predator can see them more clearly. Some creatures in the deep sea, like anglerfish, use light to draw their food to them.
