All the fur grows from follicles that contns the pifment- generating melanocytes cells. It's just that in the white fur these melanocytes are deactivated. This implies that black is the default colour of the fur and that's why most authorities and experts describe zebra as black with white stripes.

Zebras have black and white stripes on their bodies, which help to camouflage them and also may serve as a way of repelling biting insects.

The exact reason for the evolution of zebra stripes is still a subject of scientific research and debate. There are several hypotheses that attempt to explain why zebras have developed their distinctive black and white stripes: Camouflage and Disruption: One of the most widely accepted theories is that the stripes provide effective camouflage in their natural habitats, which include grasslands and savannas with tall grasses. The stripes may disrupt the outline of the zebra's body, making it harder for predators like lions and hyenas to single out individual zebras from a distance when they are in a group. This concept is known as "motion dazzle" or "disruptive coloration."
