According to Lamarck, giraffe's long neck evolved from its continual striving to reach food. In order to reach food they stretched their necks and passed the stretching down through generation.

In short, giraffes' long necks are the result of generation upon generation of repeated stretching and inheritance.

According to the known swath of fossil giraffes', significant neck elongation began around 14 million years ago during the Late Miocene.

Giraffes have a long neck because it is easier for them to get food and drink. They need more air to travel through than when they have a shorter neck.
