A Google search reveals that the saying "God helps those who help themselves" is not from the Holy Bible. A computerized Bible search corroborates this. Since God instructs us to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (I Thessalonians 5:21) it benefits us to consider to what extent the saying is harmonious with God's Word.

As an overall message, it is not particularly in alignment, as throughout the Bible it is much more emphasized that God helps those who help others.

And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. Job 42:10

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: II Corinthians 9:8

Despite its lack of overall harmony, the words "God helps" are a reminder to the Biblically-minded that God's help and backing are available and the primary help we need when confronted with a challenge. Likewise, the words "help themselves" can be a reminder to those knowledgeable of God's Word that while others may offer words of encouragement, there are certain responsibilities that God expects the individual himself to accomplish.

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12

An alternative saying, "You do your best, and God will do the rest" fits harmoniously with the truths of God's Word, and offers both encouragement and perspective.

After reading your question a short story came to my mind, I don't remember exactly who narrated me the story, but I do remember the story.

Once there was a boatman who went to catch fish, but due to bad weather, he got stuck in the wind. His boat got destroyed and was drawing in the water, he prayed to Jesus to save his life, soon after that another boat appeared from nowhere and offered him help, but he rejected it saying God will save me and that another boatman went will his boat, and that growing boat man keep praying harder, after some time a rescue team arrived and offered him help, but he rejected again saying god will help me and kept praying after few hours a rope from the helicopter was dropped down, but the man refused to take it saying God will help me and at last he was drawn. After dying he went to heaven, he asked Jesus I prayed to you, I cried out your name, but you didn't come to save me, why?

Jesus replied, I did come three times to save you my son in the face of different people, but you refused me all the time.

Sometimes, we give up our hope after seeing nothing is going on well and stop trying any further, but that is where we go wrong. We should remember God in our every work and keep doing our work. Jesus will send help in the form of correct opportunity, correct time, and correct people and it is possible we may know it's him, but nothing happens just out of co-incidence.

That saying is not literally written but it means if we try and do our part then God finds us worthy for his help.Verse Luke 8:43-44 says"And a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years and who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and yet could not be healed by anyone, approached him from behind and touched the fringe of his garment, and instantly her flow of blood stop.Another example is in John 5:1-9 please read it and you'll find the point.

There is no place that that is written in the bible it's just a saying whi in return means that you can not stay and expect God to do everything, you must first find a way to solve the problem then God will help you.
