the main difference between search engine optimization and search engine marketing is the search engine optimization is used for focusing on optimizing the website to increase the traffic and to help during the search results to get on the top of the page where as search engine marketing is used for maintaining both traffic and other visibility of the website during the paid search.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) both are digital marketing strategies. Both SEM & SMO are used to increase the visibility of the website in search engine results pages (SERP). 

SEM is about getting traffic through paid ads (like google ads) usually the ad you see on the top of the page list. 
SEO is about organically getting traffic (proper on-page, and off-page, and generating backlinks organically).
