You can use a vacuum cleaner. The suction will help in taking out the dust and dry particles. If there are stains then use some quality liquid wash. I prefer vacuum cleaner.

Renting a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner from Safeway supermarket has always worked for me. I vacuum with a wet/dry vacuum. I then spot treat any problem areas with a cup of water, some Dawn dish soap, and a scrub-brush. After I vacuum those wet spots, I use the carpet cleaner, and I'm always sure to return it before late fees kick in. I once used pro carpet cleaner service that charged thrice a much as renting a Rug Doctor, and gave not a whit better results. Guess paying the extra bucks is okay for them too lazy to DIY it.

Regularly vacuum the carpet, spot-clean stains promptly with a carpet cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water, and schedule professional deep cleanings every 6-12 months using hot water extraction. Use a high-quality vacuum with a HEPA filter for best results.

Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of your carpet.

Mix carpet shampoo (that you've color tested) with warm water; then add the mixture to a spray bottle.

Spray the cleaning liquid over the carpet.

Brush with a carpet brush.

Blot the area.

Using a carpet-cleaning machine is your best bet for a thorough clean. If you don't own one and don't want to rent one, there's a DIY solution. Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of your carpet. Mix carpet shampoo (that you've color tested) with warm water; then add the mixture to a spray bottle.

To keep a carpet clean, regular vacuuming is essential. Use a high-quality vacuum cleaner with strong suction and rotating brushes or beater bars. Additionally, periodic deep cleaning using methods like hot water extraction (steam cleaning) or dry cleaning can help remove deeper dirt and stains.

The best equipment and method to keep a carpet clean depend on factors such as the type of carpet, the extent of soiling, and personal preferences. However, here are some general tips:

1. Regular vacuuming: Vacuuming your carpet at least once a week, or more frequently in high-traffic areas, helps remove dirt, dust, and debris before they become embedded in the fibers. Use a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush or beater bar for best results.

2. Spot cleaning: Attend to spills and stains promptly to prevent them from setting into the carpet fibers. Blot spills with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb excess liquid, then use a carpet stain remover or a mixture of mild detergent and water to clean the affected area.

3. Deep cleaning: Periodically deep clean your carpet to remove embedded dirt, allergens, and odors. You can use various methods such as steam cleaning (hot water extraction), dry cleaning (using a chemical cleaning solution), or foam cleaning (using a foaming detergent). Consider renting a carpet cleaner or hiring a professional carpet cleaning service for thorough deep cleaning.

4. Carpet protectors: Apply carpet protectors or stain repellents to newly cleaned carpets to help prevent future stains and make cleaning easier.

5. Professional cleaning: Schedule professional carpet cleaning at least once or twice a year, or as needed based on the level of soiling and foot traffic. Professional cleaners have specialized equipment and expertise to deep clean carpets effectively and efficiently.

6. Regular maintenance: Keep carpets dry and well-ventilated to prevent mold and mildew growth. Use doormats at entryways to trap dirt and moisture from shoes, and consider implementing a no-shoes policy indoors to minimize dirt accumulation.

By incorporating these cleaning practices into your routine maintenance regimen, you can help prolong the life of your carpet and keep it looking fresh and clean for years to come.
