A guy followed me on social media. He's 26 and I'm 16.

He said hi and we chatted a bit.
Then, he sent me this message:

"You are very cute! If you were a little older or if I was your age I would see if you wanted to be my girlfriend "

He even asked if I felt the same way. But why? Is this something that usually happens? Why would he send me this and what would you do?

Nice question tho, there are two reason that might have pushed him into sending the message to you. 1. anyways maybe he was actually attracted to you when he saw your picture and he felt you should be his girlfriend. 2. Or maybe he is just kidding or something else. But he might actually likes you but doesn't want to say it to you directly

With online dating you have to be cautious because some strangers want lure young girls into a thinking they want them then when time comes to meet it's either they are not the same person you were talking to online or it involves trafficking and kidnapping so be careful

He is obviously attracted to you, but age difference is too big, especially you being a minor. I think he is very thirsty guy, trying to "reserve" you when you turn 18 so he can date you then. Dating is hard for most of guys, and often they do irrational things fueled  with unused testosterone, such as hitting on a girl that is actually a minor . My advice for you, being a 23 year-old guy, is that you say thank you, and ignore him. Be careful on the Internet, and vet properly who you are going to date. You as a woman have natural edge over men anyways.

It happens and I can say there are so many people on social media who are there to gratify themselves, careless flattering and all sorts of bad things. So few are genuine . Be careful

That's natural nowadays, but it is so creepy to receive that message. People are influenced by the social media that's why they are confident of sending something like this to other people and believing that they can court everybody

It is not common for someone to send a message like this to someone they do not know. It is possible that this person is interested in you, but it is important to remember that you are only 16 years old and this individual is 26. It is important to be mindful of the age difference and to stay safe. It is best to politely decline the offer and to not engage in any further conversation.

This type of stories happens, and honestly  some do end in a good level of friendship but one has to be careful because some online connections are just traps to lure victims
