What are special steel alloys?

Special steel alloys contain small amount of some metal impurity that are meant to enhance or introduce the steel's properties. Common specialty steels include stainless steels, tool and spring steel, die and cast steels etc.

Common additives to steel alloys may include:

Carbon: Present in all steels(as steel is a carbon and iron mixture), however steels of various contents have vastly different qualities. Improves strength and hardness, while making the material less pliable. Common for tool and spring steel

Cobalt: Improves strength and hardness at high temperatures.

Chromium: Improves toughness and wear and corrosion resistance. Common for stainless steels.

Special steel alloys are types of steel that have been intentionally modified to possess specific properties for specialized applications, such as increased durability, corrosion resistance, or heat resistance. These modifications are achieved by adjusting the composition of the steel with different elements, including chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium, among others.

Special alloys are those that are made from materials such as copper or brass, but have small amounts of other elements added.
