The time required for DNS updates to propagate across the Internet is known as DNS propagation. A DNS record update, like altering the IP address assigned to a particular hostname, might take up to seventy-two hours to propagate globally, though it typically takes just a couple of hours.

When a DNS Server is updated with new or changed DNS records, it needs to propagate these changes to other DNS Servers on the internet so that clients requesting those records can receive the updated record.

  1. The updated DNS Server then sends a notification message to the parent DNS server that it is a child of, letting the parent know that it has a new or changed DNS record.
  2. The parent DNS server updates its own cache with the new information and then propagates the update to its own parent DNS server.
  3. This process continues up the DNS hierarchy, with each level of parent DNS server updating its own cache and propagating the update to its parent. Until the updated DNS records are eventually propagated to all of the DNS servers on the internet.
  4. Dns record have a Time-To-Live (TTL) value, which specifies how long other DNS servers should cache the record before checking for updates. This helps to reduce the amount of network traffic needed for DNS propagation and to ensure that clients receive the most up-to-date information

DNS records propagate by propagating changes in DNS records throughout the internet. The process of DNS propagation involves a DNS server sending out a request for the updated DNS record to all of its servers. Once the server has received the updated DNS record, it will then send the new record to all of its other servers, and the process will continue until the updated record has been propagated throughout the internet.
