Your system can be protected by adding both:

surge protectors

lightning rods

Surge Protectors

These devices work to protect you from both direct strikes and voltages induced by nearby strikes. They are installed on both sides of the inverter power circuit and on any inverter communication cables. They either direct the lightning to earth or block the surges from going any further.

In our experience the most important surge protector is the one on the ethernet communications cables. So if you do nothing else - implement surge protection on any ethernet cables.

Lightning Rods

Lightning rods protect you from direct strikes. They provide an alternative, low resistance, direct route to earth so that the lightning is much less likely to go through the solar power system. 

Obviously - if you install a lightning rod on your roof you need to avoid shading the solar panels with it.

home is equally vulnerable to lightening, if you are afraid of such incidence. Any other equipment, which could even be costlier than inverter, also can get damaged if you think so.

Not really, not required. Not practical and brother desired. There are far more costly electronic gadgets in home to only bother about inverter. And moreover your inverter isn't placed on roof top too to attract direct lightening strikes, so relax, it won't ever happen.

These are the ideal carriers of the surge voltages to down the house through the wiring and can damage anything or any electrical or electronic appliance coming in their way. In the houses, equipped with electrical earth conductors on the rooftop connected to the ground generally this surge voltage will pass on to the Earth without doing any damage to the other things. Many times these electrical conductors are not properly grounded and do not work for the intended purposes.

These surge voltages are of high magnitude but their duration is small and that is the reason that many times they do not damage much as they subdue very quickly.

 Passing of surge voltages through electrical wiring is conducive to generation of fire and any equipment attached to these lines will only add fuel to this fire. Though electric fires in household electrical lines during thundering and lightening are rare but we have to take precautions however rare they might be.
