Working in a public office and attending to hundreds of clients. I noticed whenever you get an eye contact with anyone they later look down. Why is this so, any idea?

It just happens psychologically people tend to look down after eye contact subconsciously. Maybe because of shyness also people can look down after meeting an eye contact with someone

My Dear Laura, this happens to about 200 people each day.

Does that mean humans are common in terms of shyness from eye contact?

if a person avoids looking another in the eyes, it is usually  because they feel threatened, insecure or embarrassed, for some reason. Looking away means insecurity or shame.

Look someone in the eyes, no matter who they are. Different people will respond in different ways. Even if you're merely asking them the time, someone who looks down wants to avoid conflict.

I do it all the time: I catch people's eyes, smile at them, or give them a nod if they're a man. I can generally get a smile from eight out of 10 ladies. Men are the same way; I can persuade the majority of them to give me a nod.

Children are better; they always grin and seldom look you in the eyes. They aren't terrified of the world, and they are still awestruck by strangers' eyes.

Perhaps it is not their persona to be looking in their eyes for a long time. Sometimes it can connote different meanings if doing so.

There are many reasons why people look down. Some people look down because they are introverts and never feel well in touch. Some look down because they have confidence problems and can't look you in the eye. And yet some some are afraid.

Looking down after making eye contact can be a sign of shyness or social anxiety in some people. It may indicate discomfort or a desire to end the interaction. In some cultures, avoiding prolonged eye contact is a sign of respect or submission, and direct eye contact can be considered rude or confrontational. Additionally, people may look down to gather their thoughts or to avoid distractions in their environment. It's important to note that everyone has their own unique communication style and body language, and these behaviors can be influenced by a variety of factors, including cultural norms, personality traits, and individual experiences.

This could mean different things. It could be a sign of shyness. It could also be a sign of lack of agreement with what you are  saying, which is mostly displayed by children. It could also mean that the person is reflecting on your statement.
