Safety stock is additional stock, that is used in situation when your basic stock runs out of nescessary materials for production. I think nowdays it mostly used in unforseen situations like earh quakes, etc. Safety stocks are calculation according to some mathematical models but nowdays it is counted that safety stock model in itself  are going to become outdated.

The main purpose of carrying safety stock is to make sure your supply chain runs smoothly and it also serve as a cushion when the products you've ordered take longer to reach your warehouse than expected.

The purpose of carrying safety stock is to ensure that there is always a sufficient amount of inventory available to meet customer demand, even in the event of unexpected changes in demand or supply. This means that organizations should keep a certain amount of inventory on hand that is above and beyond what is expected to meet customer demand. Some principles that should be followed when carrying safety stock include maintaining accurate inventory records, monitoring demand trends, and forecasting future demand.
