What does Russia want to achieve by attacking Ukraine?

What is Russia interest or what does it want to gain by attacking a neighboring country of ukraine and annexing its land?

Russia wants to expand its territory by annexing the countries surrounding it, but in my opinion, what it is doing now is against humanity, because of these wars it oppresses citizens and makes young children homeless.

I think what russia are planning to achieve is to add ukraine to it's territory so that they can control and over see all that ukraine is doing, thats what i know

My opinion on this is that Russia hasn't made it quite clear what they want to achieve on this war. It feels like they are making the rules as they go.

First they had indicated NATO wants to expand near its borders, Ukraine were building nuclear power, Ukrainians were Nazis. Its really mind boggling how people can play around with human lives trying to accomplish egocentric ideologies that would only benefit a few if any. This is the same thing happening across the world including Africa where if a country has a lot of naturally valuable resources, the rich have ensured  no generation will ever know peace.

Russia want to prove their mighty and more powerful than ukraine.all these issue could have been resolved diplomatically.That genocide is never accepted.

Most likely Russia is trying to restate previous Soviet Union borders. Started with Ukraine - 2014 with Crimea and now all the rest of Ukraine. Russia is claiming that NATO is broadening too far to east near Russian border. and it's threatening Russia. Although it should not be for Russia to decide who wants to join NATO.

If avoid this war Western world mainly US has a chance to make dominance in the region. US has a plan to build military centre in country. If Ukraine keep interest to join NATO Putin thought, he may lose his dominance in region and the West will be a threat to East. To avoid this he made a tie up with Belarus and with their first military show they moved towards war. Moreover Ukraine has a great source of oil farms, wheat production and good water resources. There are some groups inside the country want Ukraine annexations because of East v/s West clash.

Russia has also been accused of attempting to gain access to Ukraine's natural resources and to establish a land bridge between Crimea and mainland Russia. Additionally, some analysts believe that Russia is attempting to undermine the credibility of the European Union and NATO.
