Failure is defined as a lack of success or the inability to meet an expectation. The problem is that we can read too much into failure.

I describe failure as opposed to success and my favorite definition of success comes from Earl Nightengale "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal".

So I would describe failure in four words as "Not moving towards goals".

Trial and error.

A core principle of design thinking is the idea of failing fast and learning from failure. This mindset embraces failure as a natural part of the creative process. Trial and error provide the opportunity to continuously make things better.

As Thomas Edison famously said about inventing the light bulb, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." When you see your failures as data points, you create a new opportunity for improvement.

Failure is:

One step away from success

A valuable lesson we must change for better

A mistake that we should not let happen again

Should not be a reason to feel down to yourself

Loss, Defeat, Setback, Disappointment

Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective, and may be viewed as the opposite of success. Failure can be defined as a loss, which means that something that was expected or desired was not achieved. It can also be seen as a defeat, which means that one has been overcome by an opposing force. Failure can be a setback, it can be an obstacle that hinders progress or development. Failure can also be a disappointment, it can be a source of disappointment, frustration, and discouragement. Failure is a natural and inevitable part of life, it can be used as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.

Learning opportunity, growth catalyst.

Failure, often viewed negatively, can be reframed as a valuable learning experience. Through setbacks, individuals gain insights, learn what doesn't work, and discover areas for improvement. This process fosters  personal and professional growth, turning failure into an opportunity for development and success.
