Some people feel nervous or scared when they have to speak in front of other people, especially if they don't know them well. This is called glossophobia.

There are different reasons why someone might have this fear. For example, they might not be confident in themselves and their abilities, so they worry about making a mistake or looking bad. Or they might be worried about what other people will think of them and be afraid of being judged or rejected.

Some people might also have had a bad experience in the past related to public speaking, like being laughed at or bullied. This can make them afraid of speaking in front of people again.

Therapy can help people overcome this fear by teaching them ways to deal with the thoughts and feelings that make them scared and by slowly exposing them to the situations they fear. Sometimes, medication can also be used to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

So, it is a common fear which is caused by multiple reasons and can be treated by therapy and sometimes by medication.

People fear talking to strangers or on stage due to the fear of being judged, embarrassed or humiliated[1]. This fear can be exacerbated by a lack of confidence in one's own abilities, such as public speaking skills[2]. It can also be caused by a fear of the consequences of their actions, such as legal repercussions for a crime[3], or financial restitution for damages caused[4]. Additionally, people may be afraid of the potential risks associated with talking to strangers, such as youth involvement in criminal activities

Similarly, when speaking on a talking stage people worry about how their audience will perceive them and that they will be judged positively or negatively.

Another reason people fear talking to strangers or speaking on a talking stage is that they lack confidence in their ability to communicate effectively. They worry if they will e able to convey their message clearly or whether they will stumble over their words.

Some people lack confidence in themselves and others might laugh at them if they did some mistakes in front of a person or other people surrounding them. There are some environments where they are being bullied or out of place and have no reason at all why they should be treated this way.

Some people are shy and have low self-esteem. They go so long without reaching out and talking that they don't know how to handle the situation. The longer this goes on the harder it gets. Some people are so nervous they have panic attacks and experience high anxiety.

One of the reason is that it can be anxiety-provoking to put one self in a situation where oneself is evaluated by others. Speaking in front of a group can create feelings of vulnerability and fear dged or rejected.

Another reason is that peole may have negative experience in the past when speaking in the public. image If someone has a bad experience in the past such as being laughed at when speaking it can make them hesitate when trying to speak in the public.

Many people fear talking to strangers or speaking in front of a group of people due to a condition called social anxiety disorder (SAD). Social anxiety disorder is a mental health condition characterized by intense anxiety or fear of social interactions and situations. These fears can be specific, such as fear of speaking in public or fear of meeting new people, or they can be more general, such as fear of being judged or evaluated by others.

Some of the common symptoms of SAD include:

  • Excessive self-consciousness and self-awareness in social situations
  • Fear of being judged or rejected by others
  • Physical symptoms such as sweating, blushing, or trembling
  • Avoiding social situations altogether

The exact cause of SAD is not entirely understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. People with SAD may have an overactive amygdala, a part of the brain that processes emotions and is responsible for the fight or flight response, which can make them more susceptible to anxiety.

Additionally, people with SAD may have learned to associate certain social situations with negative experiences, or have experienced negative or traumatic events in the past that have contributed to their fear.

SAD is a treatable condition, and there are a variety of effective treatments available, including therapy, medication, and self-help techniques. It's important for people who experience fear of talking to strangers or speaking in public to seek professional help, as it can greatly impact their daily life and prevent them from reaching their full potential.
