I see it very often that an American confusing that Australia isn't a continent! Europe is a country, Middle East itself is a continent and the last one okay! that Africa is a whole country lol !

I think that a lot of it is due to the sheer size of America and therefore the massive difference between culture and climate across the country. This means that Americans can travel within the country and experience lots of different things without ever having to leave the country. I think it mostly reflects the kind of basic education is in the US & being massive in size and travelling doesn't make or add any difference! I mean China's huge too! If you talk about changing cultures within country, then talk about India where languages, clothing, food & everything changes every state and its not even as big as China!
