The smallest bird in the world is the bee hummingbird, also known as the Helena hummingbird or the zunzuncito. It is native to Cuba and measures just 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) in length from beak to tail.
Bee hummingbirds are incredibly small and delicate birds, with iridescent green and blue feathers and a distinctive curved beak that they use to feed on nectar. Despite their tiny size, they are incredibly fast and agile in flight, able to hover in mid-air and move their wings at a rate of up to 80 beats per second.
Bee hummingbirds are found only in a few locations in Cuba, where they inhabit forests, gardens, and other areas with abundant flowers and nectar. They are considered endangered due to habitat loss and the destruction of their natural breeding and feeding grounds, as well as being at risk from predators such as cats and rats. Conservation efforts are currently underway to protect the bee hummingbird and its delicate ecosystems.
