The country that gave the U.S. the Statue of Liberty is France. The statue, officially named "Liberty Enlightening the World," was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886 to celebrate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. It was designed by French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The statue, which stands at 305 feet tall, has since become an iconic symbol of American freedom and democracy, and a popular tourist attraction, located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
