Dr. Barney Clark, a retired dentist from Seattle, Washington, received the first artificial heart transplant surgery in 1982. The surgery was performed at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City by Dr. William DeVries, who implanted the Jarvik 7 artificial heart into Dr. Clark's chest to help him survive until a human heart donor could be found. Dr. Clark lived for 112 days after the surgery, but his quality of life was poor, which led to controversy surrounding the use of artificial hearts. Nonetheless, his surgery was a revolutionary achievement in the field of medical science.
