Vincent van Gogh is the artist known for his iconic painting "The Starry Night". This painting is not only one of his most famous works, but also one of the most famous paintings of the world.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in 1889, while he was staying in Saint Paul asylum in Saint Remy, France, where he lived for a year following a breakdown and mutilation of his left ear. Painted with oil on canvas, he attempted to capture the view from the window in his room. Before his death, in 1890, he could sell only few of his paintings. But it was widow of his younger brother, Jo van Gogh Bonger, who inherited Vincent van Gogh's works and successfully built him posthumous fame. She sent some of his paintings to museums and by selling others - including "The Starry Night."
