George Washington served as the nation's first president. After commanding the Continental Army to victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War, he was elected the nation's first president and held office from 1789 until 1797. Washington had an important role in the development of the United States, and his leadership and contributions to the creation of the new country are generally recognized. He is frequently referred to as the "Father of his Nation."
