Walking at night in Jersey City really depends on where you are. Neighborhoods along the waterfront like Newport, Paulus Hook, and the area around Grove Street are generally considered very safe. You'll find these spots are well-lit and often busy with people heading to restaurants or walking home, even late into the evening. The Heights is also largely safe, especially along its main avenues.
The experience can differ in other parts of the city. As with any large urban area, it's just smart to stick to main, well-populated streets and be aware of your surroundings, particularly if you are in a less familiar residential area. Overall, Jersey City's crime rates have dropped significantly over the years, but using common sense is always the best approach after dark.
