Can papaya enzyme cause miscarriage in early pregnancy? Is papaya good in third trimester?

Papaya enzyme can lead to miscarriage. The latex in unripe and semi-ripe papaya contains an enzyme called papain. This enzyme causes contraction of the uterine which results in miscarriage. A woman’s body may mistake papain as prostaglandin which is used to induce labour. So even in the third semester, the papaya enzyme (papain) can cause preterm labor as it can induce labor. However moderate consumption of fully ripe papaya is completely safe for pregnant women as it does not contain papain.

There is no strong scientific evidence directly linking papaya enzymes or ripe papaya with an increased risk of miscarriage. However, concerns are often associated with unripe papaya due to its higher latex content. As with any dietary concern during pregnancy, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure safety and receive personalized advice.
