Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union, gave John F. Kennedy a dog named Pushinka in 1961. Pushinka was the daughter of Strelka, one of the first dogs to orbit the Earth. Pushinka and Kennedy's other dog, Charlie, had a litter of puppies that were given names inspired by the space race.
