EOKA, which stands for Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters), was a GreekCypriot terrorist organization that was formed in 1955. It was associated with the island of Cyprus, which was then a British colony. EOKA's main objective was to end British colonial rule and unite the island with Greece. The groupcarried out a series of guerrilla attacks, bombings, and assassinations, targeting both British military forces and civilians. The conflict between EOKA and British forces lasted until 1959, when a ceasefire was agreed upon and Cyprus gained independence the following year. EOKA is still a controversial and divisive subject in Cyprus today, with some regarding its members as heroes and others as terrorists.
