One of the most ancient walled cities known to date is the city of Jericho in present-day Palestine. Jericho was originally settled in the Neolithic period, around 8000 BCE. Over time, Jericho grew in size and importance, becoming a vital trade center for the region.
Around 7000 BCE, Jericho's inhabitants began building walls to protect their city from potential invaders. These walls were made of stone and were over 13 feet tall, making it one of the most impressive fortifications of the time.
Over the centuries, Jericho was occupied by various groups, including the Canaanites, Egyptians, and Israelites. Despite various conflicts and sieges, the walls of Jericho remained standing, serving as a testament to the incredible engineering skills of its builders.
Today, the ruins of ancient Jericho and its walls are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors can still see the remains of the city's impressive walls, as well as other archeological finds from its long and complex history.
