The term "battery" to describe an electrical storage device was coined by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1800. He invented the first electric battery, known as the Voltaic pile, which was made up of alternating discs of copper and zinc separated by layers of cardboard soaked in saltwater. This invention laid the foundation for modern batteries and made significant contributions to the development of electronics and power storage technology.
