The original puck used in the first organized games in Kingston on March 10, 1886 (on display at the Original Hockey Hall of Fame), was made from a cut down lacrosse ball. It looks like a lump of coal, is made from soft rubber, and bounces far more than a modern hockey puck.

The first hockey pucks used in early outdoor hockey games were rounded pieces of wood, metal, or rubber. Later, vulcanized rubber pucks were used and became the standard for the sport.

The first hockey pucks used in early outdoor hockey games were made of frozen cow dung. As the game continued to evolve, people began using flat pieces of wood as pucks. Eventually, rubber was introduced as a safer and more durable material for hockey pucks.
